Company History

E.T.S. (Portsmouth) Limited (trading as ETS Cable Components) was incorporated in 1988, when the company was based in Hilsea, Portsmouth. The original objective was to set up a business dedicated to providing excellent levels of stock and service for a defined range of power cable accessories.

Many companies supplied the cable, but there was a gap in the market for a product-focused distributor of our type. In 1991 we opened our London branch and soon became the leading supplier to the South East Contracting and Utility markets.

Our current head office and main distribution centre has been based at Chessington since 2018.

Expansion

As we supply products all over the UK and Europe, our new entity, ETS Cable Components Ireland Ltd, started trading in Dublin in 2021.

Quality

The company’s policy has always been to provide quality products and service on a continuous basis. In 2003 we implemented a full Q.A. programme to ensure the ongoing effectiveness of our policy.

In 2023 we achieved third party certification for ISO 14001:2015 to help us to achieve our environmental and sustainability aims.

Video Footage Of The World’s Largest Floating Solar Farm

Built on the QE2 reservoir, near London’s Heathrow Airport, this solar farm has a peak output of 6.3 megawatts and is expected to generate 5.8 million kilowatt hours in its first year – equivalent to the annual consumption of around 1,800 homes.

Due to the typical fast track nature of solar farms, ETS played a vital role during the construction phase by delivering relevant products, such as MV terminations on a same day basis helping to ensure that the project was completed in time and operational in March this year.

The energy generated by this farm will be used to power nearby water treatment plants operated by Thames Water who are aiming to self-generate a third of their own energy by 2020. The video is supplied courtesy of Lightsource Renewable Energy who delivered this ambitious project and were responsible for installation of 23,000 plus solar panels.

Exothermic Welding Training

Our in-house training school for the nVent ERICO Cadweld exothermic welding system provides hands-on training courses designed to demonstrate and teach the correct use and applications of the CADWELD welding system.

Ellis No Bolts Cleat

ETS Cable Components are proud to be part of the development and subsequent launch of a new range of cleats which requires no conventional fixings to supporting steel-work.

The design also allows for additional cleats to be stacked on top of one another with nothing more than a small turn of a unique fixing lock.

Nexans Euromold 430TB Installation Video

This installation video provides instructions on the correct cable preparation procedure and installation of 430TB elbow connectors.

Emperor Cable Cleat Short-Circuit Test

This video clip demonstrates the strength of our Emperor trefoil cleats under short-circuit conditions.

A short-circuit of 59kA RMS (118kA peak) is passed down the three-phase arrangement for a period of 0.1 seconds, showing the cables being forced apart by the physical forces present under such conditions and demonstrating the need for correct cable restraint.

LSF Cable Gland Shroud Comparison

This video shows two different kinds of cable gland shrouds being put under a flame test. One shroud is an imported LSF version the other is a genuine CMP LSF gland shroud.

Heat Shrink Vs Cold Shrink Cable Joints

The debate between Heat Shrink and Cold Shrink has always been split. We don’t believe that one method is more superior to the other, but each have their own benefits and suit different installations.

The video compares Heat Shrink and Cold Shrink cable jointing procedures, showing how to carry out each method.

Alpha Trefoil Cable Cleat Short-Circuit Test

This video shows our popular Alpha trefoil cleat undergoing short-circuit testing to and four different fault levels, comparing these results with similar test where the cables are restrained with cable ties.

Fault levels tested, with cables cleated every 600mm:

  • 30kA RMS
  • 35kA RMS
  • 40kA RMS
  • 45kA RMS

Ideally suitable for all commercial and industrial applications and fast becoming the industry leader in securing single-core cables in trefoil formation, the Alpha is suitable for installations where modest levels of short-circuit protection capability are required.

Stainless Steel Cable Ties Short-Circuit Test

This video shows the same short-circuit (59kA RMS) passed down a similar cable arrangement, but fastened with stainless steel cables ties and aptly demonstrates the need for using the correct cable cleat for your application.

Emperor Trefoil Cable Cleat – (Short Circuit 118kA)

This video clip demonstrates the strength of the Ellis Patents Emperor trefoil cleats under short-circuit conditions.

A short-circuit of 59kA RMS (118kA peak) is passed down the three-phase arrangement for a period of 0.1 seconds, showing the cables being forced apart by the physical forces present under such conditions and demonstrating the need for correct cable restraint.

Delayed Payments Still Causing Concern

Delayed payments continue to be a major cause of concern for businesses providing building services, new industry research has found.

The overwhelming majority of responders to the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) survey indicated that in the final quarter of 2015 they were not always paid within 30 days. These payment terms are widely understood to be good practice in the sector.

Only 8% of contractors said that all public sector work was paid on time during this period. In the private sector, this figure was even lower with just 6% of respondents saying they had received payment within 30 days.

The survey also found that eight out of ten building and electrical services firms had increased their turnovers in the period. Specialist areas which enjoyed the most growth included: data communications, audio visual systems, fire and security, systems, and building energy management systems.

The research was produced in association with Scolmore.

Future Wind Turbines Likely To Be Higher Than The Gherkin

Wind Turbine GuerkinWind turbines higher than London’s Gherkin are likely to be more common in future, according to a global power engineering specialist company.

K2 Management consultants believe that new manufacturing techniques will mean turbine heights are likely to soar up to 170 metres in the coming years. This is almost as high as the Eiffel Tower and taller than the BT Tower.

Over the last decade turbines have grown steadily in height as operators seek stronger wind speeds higher up.

A MW turbine located in a forest, for instance, with an average wind speed of 6 metres per second will meet 13% more wind speed if the turbine height doubled from 70 to 140 metres, according to wind resource engineers.

Going higher still to 170 metres is predicted to boost energy yield by 35% on average.

Ellis Clamps Supplied For Hong Kong High Speed Rail Extension

HK-MTR-Express-Link-TrainManufacturer Ellis has supplied a total of 125,000 cable clamps for the Hong Kong MTR network high speed rail extension.

The clamps are being used to secure pilot, power, and fibre optic cables throughout all the tunnels in the Hong Kong section of the Express Rail Link (XRL).

XLR runs from the Shenzhen Hong Kong Boundary – where it connects to the China Mainland – to West Kowloon.

When fully operational, trains will be able to operate at a maximum speed of 200km per hour. Journey times would be cut by an average of 50%.

ETS Cable Components are the official suppliers, stockists and distributors of Ellis Patents cable cleats and clamps in the UK. See the extensive range here.
