Phoenix Cable Cleat – Engineered For Fire Resistant Cables

September 30, 2022 by admin

More and more construction projects, including major new developments within the public and commercial sectors, are requiring that fire resistant cable is installed.

Fire resistant cable or fire performance cable is used for vital emergency systems such as fire alarms, smoke extractors, emergency lighting and fire-fighting lifts. Even during a fire, the cable is designed to continue working for a period of time.

Yet without fire resistant cable being properly supported, there is a real danger that these vital services cables will fail. Plastic ties, cable clips and trunking are not suitable as the only means of cable support.

Rigorous Testing With Fire Resistant Cable

That’s why ETS developed with manufacturer, Ellis Patents, the Phoenix cable cleat. The cleat has been precision engineered to support fire resistant cables.

Fire resistant cables must be able to withstand temperatures of 600°F for two hours. They are also subjected to water to simulate sprinklers and a simulation of falling debris.

Unlike stainless steel cable ties or aluminium cleats, which do not match the requirements of fire resistant cables, the Phoenix cable cleat is designed to carry on supporting these types of cables for a period of time after a fire breaks out.

Phoenix Cable Cleats Testing With Fire Resistant Cable
The Phoenix cable cleat under test conditions

To prove their fire resistance, the Phoenix cleats were used during a series of tests to secure a fire rated cable in accordance with BS 5839-1:2002, Section 26.2d. Fire resistance cable is classified as F30, F60, F90 or F120. This represents the length of time, in minutes, of the fire test.

During the testing and the performance, as expected, the cleats successfully supported the cable. We would be happy to supply you with a copy of the test report and data sheet.

Phoenix Cable Cleat Specified In Major Projects

Fire Resistant Cable Cleats
ETS have supplied Phoenix cable cleats for major projects such as the Olympic ArcelorMittal Orbit and Twickenham Rugby Stadium (both pictured).

ETS Key Account Manager, Ron Spence, said:

“We have supplied Phoenix cleats for a number of major projects such as for residential developments at One Hyde Park and the Olympic Village. ETS have also delivered the cleats to the Twickenham Rugby Stadium, the Olympic ArcelorMittal Orbit and BP4 Canary Wharf to name just a few.

“Many main contractors are now specifying that fire resistant cable cleats are used in projects. With the Orbit, the specification was that all materials had to last for 25 years. The cleats also had to be able to withstand outside weather conditions.

“We are currently in talks for supplying the cleats for three or four Crossrail projects – Crossrail use lots of fire resistant cables on their projects,” said Mr Spence.

Precision Engineered

Precision engineered from Type 316L stainless steel with single bolt fixing, Phoenix cleats are available in 12 sizes to suit single cables from 10mm to 73mm in diameter.

Phoenix cleats are:

  • Suitable for use with all fire resistant cables.
  • Designed within installations which require vital circuits to continue operation in the event of a fire outbreak.
  • Equally suitable within extremely onerous environmental conditions: power stations, petrochemical plants, mass transit systems and for food-industry use.

The cleats are also compliant for use with London Underground (LUL) Engineering Standard 1-085 A2, Product Register Number: 1661 and meets the International Standard IEC 61914:2009.

“We expect to see even more main contractors specifying the use of fire resistant cleats in the future,” said Mr Spence.

Wiring Regulations

BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) sets the standards for electrical installation in the UK and many other countries.

BS 7671 states that for all cables within escape routes to be supported such that they will not be liable to premature collapse whether they are fixed to a wall, or to the underside of a ceiling regardless of being clipped direct to the structure, or enclosed within or on a wiring system.

BS 5839-1:2013 provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in and around non-domestic buildings. It does not recommend whether or not a fire detection and fire alarm system should be installed in any given premises.

Quality Cable Glands: The Inside Workings

September 30, 2022 by admin

Cheap Cable Glands

Cheap cable glands flooding the market continues to be a major problem for the industry. These products may offer in the short-term greater margins but over time could carry serious risks for cable installations.

In hazardous and harsh environments, for instance, cheaper gland seals may be subject to attacks from airborne pollutants and other environmental elements. If glands fail because of poor quality, an installer’s reputation could be the very least of their worries.

What is also concerning is that some stockists may not even be aware that supplying glands that do not comply with the standard BS EN 62444:2013 (Cable gland for electrical installations) is a punishable offence.

Highest Standards

ETS Cable Components only offers quality cable glands from a range of manufacturers including CMP. We take a look at the inside workings of CMP’s triton glands.

All CMP triton glands are produced from quality brass. Cheaper glands from other stockists are often made from “honey” brass which has been melted down and recast from scrap metal. This means the material is full of impurities which undermines the strength and integrity of the finished product.

Over time this poor material could lead to threads shearing or glands literally falling apart. In some cases the glands may rust after only a few years of use.

1. Inner Seal Assembly

CMP have developed a clever innovative inner sealing system for their triton glands. The design means that the issue of over-tightening inadvertently has been eliminated.

Traditional compression seals have no means of direct control on their application. CMP’s Compensating Displacement Seal System is achieved through a displacement seal which can be independently controlled during installation.

The armour clamping components and the inner sealing ring are separated. The cable gland components can be fully tightened metal-to-metal. This relieves potential excess forces, such as from cold flow, which could then lead to cable bedding damage.

2 and 3. Unique Termination Solution

Involving a unique termination solution, CMP’s armour clamping method ensures a permanent crimping of the cable armour. This creates a low impedance connection that does not suffer from self-loosening.

Secure armour clamping like this also contributes to enhanced levels of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance as well as reliable earth continuity.

4. Enclosed Deluge Seal To Prevent Corrosion

By ensuring that moisture cannot track around the cable gland threads and into the armour termination body, CMP’s integrated ‘O’ ring deluge seal (tested to  DTS 01:91) prevents cable armour corrosion.

The ‘O’ ring is also protected from mechanical damage and harmful UV rays.

5. Cable Gland Body

All CMP glands are from quality brass and not cheaper materials which may fail over time.

6. Clear Identification Markers

All quality glands have clear identification markers and are CE marked. CE marking shows the product has met certain standards. Buyers should have serious concerns if there is no CE marking.

A CE mark, however, does not always guarantee that the product complies – some rogue manufacturers have been known to use CE marking falsely.

7. Outer Seal

With the outer seal, the unique CMP’s Outer Seal Tightening Guide (OSTG) and Load Retention Sealing Ring (LRS) ensures an IP/NEMA rated seal is formed against the cable to the correct degree.

Peace Of Mind

ETS Cable Components offers wide range of quality glands including CMP Brass Explosion Proof (ATEX) glands:

  • PXSS2K Brass Explosion Proof (ATEX) Cable Glands
  • PX2K Brass Explosion Proof (ATEX) Cable Glands

These are compound filled to provide both flameproof and explosion protection.

CMP Conqueror Cable Cleat – RTSS121130

July 6, 2021 by

Conqueror has been designed to suit a wide cable range take, allowing one cleat to fit a much broader range of cable sizes than a conventional fixed hinge cable cleat.

A common problem when ordering cable is that the actual outer cable diameter may vary from the nominal size by as much as 5%. If the cable diameter is at the upper or lower limit of a fixed hinge cable cleats range, this could result in the cleat being either too small or too large to properly restrain the cables

The Conqueror can easily cope with these size fluctuations, reducing the need for multiple cleat sizes to safely clamp the cables. The simple and easy-to-use adjustable hinge of the conqueror cable cleat allows each of the 16 sizes to provide a cable range take of 9mm, almost twice that of other fixed hinge cable cleats.

The Conqueror cable cleats are metallic cable cleats designed, constructed, and tested in accordance with the International Standard ‘cable cleats for Electrical Installations’ IEC 61914. The Conqueror cable cleat has been designed to restrain a large cable range take, and tested for exceptionally high short circuit conditions on cables held in trefoil application / formation, to ensure the securing and retention of cables without damage.

Conqueror is unique with its patent pending adjustable hinge. The movement of this hinge virtually doubles the range take adjustment when compared to other fixed hinged products on the market. Conqueror covers a range of cable diameters from 19mm up to 130mm in only 15 sizes.

The cable cleat is fabricated from 316L stainless steel, giving it high creep strength whilst providing excellent corrosion resistance in the harshest of environments.

The Conqueror cable cleat has one M12 and two M10 fixing clearance holes within its base, allowing versatility to the installer during installation, and is designed to enable the product to be secured to a variety of mounting surfaces.
