The ‘Cathedral of Science’ opens in London

September 9, 2016 by admin

Named after Francis Crick who discovered the helix structure of DNA, Europe’s largest biomedical research institute welcomed the first Scientists last week. ETS Cable Components are proud to have been involved with the electrical infrastructure installation of this mega construction project. The funding comes from a partnership of: Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, Imperial College London, Kings College London (KCL), Wellcome Trust and University College London (UCL).

ETS worked with the appointed M&E sub-contractors, including those working on the Low and medium voltage cable installation to ensure all cable accessories were delivered on time to meet all target ‘power on’ dates.

Due to the challenges of this site being developed in a heavily built up area on central London, 45% of the building was preassembled off site. ETS designed and supplied custom made earthbars to Laing O’Rourke’s offsite manufacturing division, to form part of their own modules, which in turn were delivered to site ‘just in time’.

New Selection Guides And Cable Data Available Online

May 18, 2016 by admin

Want to know what product to terminate a 33kV cable with, or find out the under armour diameter of a 120mm 4 core cable?

ETS Cable Components now offer a range of cable data and relevant accessory selector guides on their new website.

Available as downloadable PDF’s, the cable data provides detailed information including: weight, bending radius, and diameter info for single / multi core armoured and unarmoured cables from 450/750v up to 33kV.

In addition, ETS also supply in-depth cable accessory selector charts to help you choose the right accessory for installing and terminating a range of low and medium voltage power cables. These can either assist at estimating stage or for installation design purposes, where further product data sheets can also be downloaded.

Nick Timms, ETS Cable Components Technical Manager, said:

“We at ETS have always prided ourselves on providing easily accessible and legible products data sheets and these cable accessories guides will provide invaluable information to clients, enabling them to select the correct gland or cleat for their specific application with ease.

“Although every effort has made to ensure accuracy, with so many varied cable sources in the marketplace, it is always preferable to obtain accurate dimensions of the cable/s being used with a particular gland or cleat”.

Customers wanting a quick answer on an accessory selection can also call one of the ETS product specialists on 0208 405 6789.

**ETS Cable Components always recommends that data is taken from the actual cable being used on site.

Video Footage Of The World’s Largest Floating Solar Farm

Built on the QE2 reservoir, near London’s Heathrow Airport, this solar farm has a peak output of 6.3 megawatts and is expected to generate 5.8 million kilowatt hours in its first year – equivalent to the annual consumption of around 1,800 homes.

Due to the typical fast track nature of solar farms, ETS played a vital role during the construction phase by delivering relevant products, such as MV terminations on a same day basis helping to ensure that the project was completed in time and operational in March this year.

The energy generated by this farm will be used to power nearby water treatment plants operated by Thames Water who are aiming to self-generate a third of their own energy by 2020. The video is supplied courtesy of Lightsource Renewable Energy who delivered this ambitious project and were responsible for installation of 23,000 plus solar panels.

Nexans Euromold 430TB Installation Video

This installation video provides instructions on the correct cable preparation procedure and installation of 430TB elbow connectors.

Emperor Cable Cleat Short-Circuit Test

This video clip demonstrates the strength of our Emperor trefoil cleats under short-circuit conditions.

A short-circuit of 59kA RMS (118kA peak) is passed down the three-phase arrangement for a period of 0.1 seconds, showing the cables being forced apart by the physical forces present under such conditions and demonstrating the need for correct cable restraint.

LSF Cable Gland Shroud Comparison

This video shows two different kinds of cable gland shrouds being put under a flame test. One shroud is an imported LSF version the other is a genuine CMP LSF gland shroud.

Heat Shrink Vs Cold Shrink Cable Joints

The debate between Heat Shrink and Cold Shrink has always been split. We don’t believe that one method is more superior to the other, but each have their own benefits and suit different installations.

The video compares Heat Shrink and Cold Shrink cable jointing procedures, showing how to carry out each method.

Alpha Trefoil Cable Cleat Short-Circuit Test

This video shows our popular Alpha trefoil cleat undergoing short-circuit testing to and four different fault levels, comparing these results with similar test where the cables are restrained with cable ties.

Fault levels tested, with cables cleated every 600mm:

  • 30kA RMS
  • 35kA RMS
  • 40kA RMS
  • 45kA RMS

Ideally suitable for all commercial and industrial applications and fast becoming the industry leader in securing single-core cables in trefoil formation, the Alpha is suitable for installations where modest levels of short-circuit protection capability are required.

Stainless Steel Cable Ties Short-Circuit Test

This video shows the same short-circuit (59kA RMS) passed down a similar cable arrangement, but fastened with stainless steel cables ties and aptly demonstrates the need for using the correct cable cleat for your application.

Improved Project Starts Brightening Construction Prospects

May 16, 2016 by admin

A rise in projects starts during the first quarter against the closing months of 2015 points to a brightening outlook for industry workload over the coming months.

The latest Glenigan Index shows that the value of work starting on site in the three months to March was 5% up on the preceding quarter, although 13% lower than a year ago in the three months to March was 13% down on the same period of a year ago. This improvement on the performance in recent month is evidence that industry workload is stabilising after the disruptions seen over the winter.

Construction Growth 2016Furthermore the development pipeline is continuing to strengthen, with the value of work securing planning approval in the first quarter 9% up on a year of planned projects, driven by an increase in private sector schemes. The development pipeline of private housing, industrial and office projects are particularly strong.

“Private investor confidence will be key. Near term we anticipate that some private sector investors will defer their final commitment to proceed with planned projects until after June’s EU referendum.

Nevertheless we anticipate that the strong private sector development pipeline expected to boost tendering opportunities over the coming months as clients’ line up work to start in the second half of the year.

Accordingly while the impending vote is likely to dampen project starts in the near term, the second half of 2016 could see a sharp rise in activity as private investors press ahead with projects once the issue of EU memberships has been resolved.”

Many of those areas worst affected at the turn on the year by the flooding and water logged ground have seen the sharpest turnaround in project starts. The North West, West Midlands East of England and Scotland all saw a double digit growth in the value of projects starting on site during the first quarter.
